【Report】 The 5th GIAR International Symposium

On October 23, the 5th GIAR International Symposium took place on Showa campus. After the welcome address by President Hiroshi Hiratsuka, the invited speakers and GIAR members delivered their talks focusing on mass-spectrometry-based omics research.  Each talk derived a number of fruitful discussions from the audience and gave us opportunities for networking and interdisciplinary research. As a special lecturer, this symposium featured Professor. Markus Wenk of National University of Singapore who was worldwide famous for the research about the application of lipidomics to understand the natural variation in blood lipids at the population level. The dedicated audience eagerly participated in a question and answer session after his lecture. Finally, this event successfully ended with the closing remarks by Vice President Takashi Minegishi.

GIAR was established in April, 2014 to promote globally competitive research in the fields where Gunma University had great strengths, namely “Integrated Oncology Research” and “Endocrinology, Metabolism and Signal Research”. Last year, we newly developed the area of “Element Science Research” and started the collaboration with ENSCM. Currently, each laboratory at GIAR conducts cutting-edge research activities with the top-level researchers from home and abroad. Through this symposium, we had over 80 attendees, and it was a great occasion to introduce the advanced research at GIAR.
